Is Moving the World Cup to Nov / Dec bad idea for Europe

Is moving the World Cup to November/December a bad idea?

With FIFA now confirming that the world cup will take place during November and December of 2022.

Now, everyone is up in arms FA, Premier League, SKY TV etc. There is a chance here to change the start of the league from August to January. They are looking at it as if the European leagues will stay the same. With most of the major European leagues starting around the same points. Some of the leagues in Russia and the other north European already have different start dates for their leagues due to the weather etc. Sky do not really want a World Cup in November / December as there is not advertising revenues for them.

This is an opportunity to change the European football calendar

This could benefit the fans and the grass roots of the game. With the league starting in January and running through to September. The games would be played during the warmer months of the year this would benefit the grass roots where the players would not be playing football on muddy pitches, this would help the players become more technical rather than hoof the ball up the pitch.

The fans would be more likely to come out and support the local teams if the games were played in the warmer months. This has worked well for Super league when it moved from a winter game to spring summer game.

There is the possibility that this would not be the last time for the world cup will be held in the middle eastern countries with the influence that the oil rich countries are have on the major leagues in Europe.

So how would it work?

·         Finish 2021 / 2022 season as normal May
·         World cup Nov / Dec 2022
·         Major European leagues start Jan 2023
·         Season finishes September 2023

This would then become the normal football calendar. The players would have a long break in the first season this would help them prepare for the world cup and the start of the new season. The World cup and the Euro’s would be held in October every other two years.

Of course this would upset the traditions of our game in the UK with this calendar but just because we have always done it this way does not mean they can’t change. Things change all the time and we just take them in our stride without even noticing them sometimes. This is the price we may have to pay for the globalisation of the game.
